in search of…

I am in two exhbitiions in Holland curated by Lennard Dost and Daniel Dennis de Wit. The shows are about Bas Jan Ader. One is in Ader’s father’s church in Niewu-Beerta. His father served here a few years (after biking from Holland to Jerusalem) before joining the Dutch Resistance and going underground. He would later be jailed when a plot for an armed overthrow of a deportation camp for Jews in The Netherlands was discovered by Nazi intelligence. In jail he would be executed in retaliation for the killing of a Nazi officer by members of the Resistance. Why was he chosen to be killed? Possibly because his name starts with the letter A…  The other exhibition is in Groningen, where Bas Jan Ader went to art school, and where he would have had an exhibition sometime following the completion of In Search of the Miraculous in 1975. I am currently staying in Winschoten, where Ader went to high school.
