LETS GO FOR A WALK

SOME INSTRUCTIONS

I write these instructional text-pieces for people who make donations to my college fund.  I thought I'd post the one I just wrote:

This was written on May 18, 2008 for Gary Rutz. You will carry out the following actions.

-

Use your own judgment on what you think the environmental impacts of this are.  Depending on where you live, you might not feel comfortable doing this.  Or, maybe you do.  If you don't want to do it, just imagine you are doing it.

On a day you think the sky is especially nice looking you will compliment the sky by giving her a flower.

Go to a florist and purchase a rose.

Go to a place that sells balloons and buy enough balloons that will carry the rose into the sky.

Tie the balloons to the rose.

Go to a nice location and give the sky the rose.

You can take a picture of the rose going into the sky, or you can just watch it uninterruptedly go up and disappear.

THE DARK FAIR LETTERS

I had all of these posted on my blog.  I decided to take them down and consolidate them into a zip file.  You can download the zip file.  I went to the Dark Fair in New York - the "experimental" art-fair that was held at the Swiss Institute.  I decided to write letters to every gallery whose business card I had found in my pocket when I got home.  The letters describe my shows at their spaces.  They are not proposals or descriptions of my work.  They intend to read as the descriptions of actual future shows.

IDEA FOR A FUNNY BOOK

After Ed Ruscha's classic artist-book, 'Every Building on the Sunset Strip,' I will make a book called 'Every Restaurant on the Sunset Strip' which will consist of photographs of me eating at every restaurant on the Sunset Strip.  Maybe I should get collector's to purchase each meal, which they can eat with me.

SOME THINGS I HAVE MAILED

I am going to think about things I have mailed right now.  I will try to compile a list of 5 things.  Lets see how it turns out.

- I mailed a polaroid of the view looking south at Hateruma Island in Japan.  It's the southern most island, so the view was a view all the way at the bottom.  I mailed it from the island in the little post office.  I remember this.

- I sent a letter from Japan via air-mail.

- I sent a letter on the same day as above from Japan via the sea.  I like to think of both letters leaving my hand at the same point, and having the same destination point, yet the time and place between these two points are far from the same.  A journey across an ocean on a boat.  Or flying through the sky in an airplane.

- I once mailed dusk from Palos Verdes.  I photographed the horizon after the sun went down until it was completely dark.  I cut open the envelope and bound the photographs in there.  The envelope was a book.

- I once mailed a map (made of photographs) to my favorite place to watch the sunset in Palos Verdes (where I took the above photographs).  I mailed 3 of these and gave 2 away as birthday presents.

FREE SUNSETS

If you want prints of the 15 sunsets from my recent show, I will upload the original files online.  You can download them and print them anyway you want (you can print them at home, or take them to any 1 hour photo store).  If you want the URL to the files, send me an email and I will give it to you.
