To a Sunset in Palos Verdes
David Horvitz
Closing reception May 3rd - 9pm
siteLA 2522 Sunset Blvd.

Performances by:

Barr
Infinite Body
A Lucky Dragons Absent Performance

Free newsprint and supplementary book by David Horvitz (while supplies last)
Free posters and post-cards by Sarah Anderson/ Sumi Ink Club.

Everyday from April 19 - May 3 David Horvitz left the gallery on Sunset Blvd. and took buses to the end of the Palos Verdes peninsula to watch the sunset.  He returned each night with a photograph, which he put up on the wall.  The exhibition changed each day with the growing photographs.  The exhibition, in a sense, were the sunsets that happened each night during the two dates.

I want this show to be about an actual moment, and not just the photographs.  I am thinking, that since the closing is on the last day, that I will maybe take down the photographs before the night is over and turn them into gifts and just give them all away.  So, then everything will be gone, like how a moment ends.  Free photographs!

Earlier that day at 1pm I will occupy Ooga Booga and give away FREE COOKIES until they run out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SOMETHING TO DO

Maybe if you want to you can do this:

During my exhibition in Los Angeles, in which I am trying to exhibit the sunsets as they are during those dates, maybe you would like to do the same?  If you watch the sunset between April 19 - May 3 please take a photo and mail it to:

AN EMAIL

G,

yeah, it's brand new.  it's a residency for women, and i'm not a woman, but i'm doing it through my friend who is a resident there, and who just left to tour japan.  so, it's like me through her...

i will be exhibiting 15 sunsets.  i am taking a bus from the gallery everyday of the show to palos verdes.  it's like a 2-3 hour bus ride.  then i'll get off at the last stop and walk to a cliff and watch the sunset.  i will return by bus and put a photograph up on the wall.  so, by the end of the show it will be 15 sunset photographs for everyday.  but i am more interested in the actual sunset as the content of the show.  like, i want people to think of the exhibit as me saying:  "go to palos verdes and watch the sunset, that is the show."  and since i am taking a public bus, if anyone chose to, they could ride with me.  in the show will be this text piece on the wall with the growing photographs.  also, as supplementary documents, there is a new newsprint i made, and an edition of 100 books.  and maybe pinned on the wall some images and texts and other things that relate to the show.  but i want my action and these sunsets to be the main content of it.  i'm also having the window painted with the sunset times for the next two weeks so anyone driving by can see this information, and hopefully it will disrupt their daily routine, and maybe they will then spontaneously decide that they will go and watch the sunset.

there will be a closing, not an opening.  more info soon.

p.s.  I want to post this email on my blog.  Are you OK if I do that?  I am going to post it now, if you want me to take your name off, let me know and I will do it immediately.  I just think I kind of summed up my thoughts on this show, so I will post it in email format.

p.p.s.  Sunday and Monday I will be on a bus in the evening.  Ha!  But, I will be free in the morning/mid-day and at night.

Hi David,

Obviously I could not make it last night, had a going away party to attend. What are you plans for this weekend? Sunday and Monday are best for me.
I think I know the space, siteLA, it's new isn't it? Will there be an opening? What are you showing?

Hope all is well.

Talk to ya soon,
Gladys

A LITTLE DISTRACTION

a distraction

I found three mirrors in front of someone's house in Los Angeles.  I decided to pick them up and re-locate them.  I placed them at an angle on the side of a small dirt hill so that when you looked at them you would see the sky.  But, this is Los Angeles, so this is just a flat blue.  At the very least, even if it is just simply monochromatic, someone's wandering gaze may be slightly distracted.
